........While others are not so fortunate..... These 3 photos are the only ones we have of the numerous sad sights of people like this we saw in Italy. We didn't take any other photos like this because we wanted to respect whatever dignity these people had left. We did give some money to the pathetically frail woman in black here. Of all the people like this we encountered, she touched our hearts the most. From the body language of the man in the red shirt, I feel that he was equally as stunned and disheartened as we were to suddenly be confronted with such a pitiful sight amid all the surrounding beauty!

I'd rather say the guy is pretty amazed with the beautiful view..I would have liked to see that instead, cause that sad part of life we know perfectly and it's all over the world.

Yes, sad sights like this ARE all over the world, including for example in San Francisco, where the city government there has tried to resolve the problem by giving individual homeless people $1,000 a month, hoping they will then no longer hang around the tourist areas and beg for money. But that idea hasn't worked so far. I agree with you that the man in the red shirt in our photo was undoubtedly startled at the beautiful panorama he saw, but even more so at seeing the contrast between this beauty and the poor woman kneeling bent over on the stairs, motionless for so long. This picture was intended to show the "many contrasting faces of Italy" as I stated at the top of my Blog, and this was one of them. Again, it is absolutely a sad fact of life, unfortunately all over the world. Thanks for your comments! Joann
